I was referred to Dr. Chen by my reproductive specialist. I had tried several different acupuncturists before coming to Dr. Chen. I also tried chiropractors, massage therapists, yoga, changes to my diet; you name it, I probably tried it.
Dr. Chen was different. I felt immediately comfortable when I entered her office for the first time. It’s nice but not too flashy. It’s comfortable, but not too stuffy. Her first order of business was to learn about me and what the issues were. The whole time we talked, she was busy fluffing my pillow, straightening the sheet underneath me, dimming the lighting, and adjusting the soft music. It was clear that she was eager to make me comfortable. She left the room briefly and when she returned, she saw that I was reading a book on the table. She gave me a scolding that I still remember to this day.
I’m a type-A personality and big on being productive, even in a doctor’s office. I was using my time at the acupuncturist to read self-help books, or reports from work. She insisted I put the book down and relax. She educated me about how the process works and that if I didn’t relax, everything she was doing was going to be futile. She told me that I had to slow down my brain activity; that I had to learn how to rest and relax. She informed me that she knew her business and that I should listen to her.
Well, it was extremely difficult for me to not get something accomplished while I laid on that table, but I trusted her. I did what she told me. For the first time in a very long time I drifted off into such a relaxed state that I actually fell asleep during the middle of day.
I came to enjoy my weekly hour of relaxation with Dr. Chen. I trusted her with my future babies. I am happy to report that after only a few short months with Dr. Chen, I successfully conceived a baby girl after a painful four year struggle with infertility. That baby girl just celebrated her 3rd birthday. My life is everything I ever imagined as a mom and more. I will never be able to thank Dr. Chen and her staff enough for their help in my journey to motherhood.
Q and A – Acupuncture Therapy for Infertility Treatments
Reproductive specialists refer many patients to us in hopes that our combined treatments will result in pregnancy. Various studies and research suggest that acupuncture can increase fertility by reducing stress, increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs and helping to balance the endocrine system.
How Does it Work?
Dr. Chen may ask you a series of questions to determine the best treatment plan for your individual situation. The office environment is relaxing and extremely comfortable. Treatment involves sterile, thin needles inserted into specific points along the body’s meridian in order to clear energy blockages. This encourages normal flow of qi (pronounced “chi”) throughout the body. The process is not painful, in fact most patients find it extremely relaxing.
What Does it Help?
Acupuncture is also known to help someone struggling with infertility by reducing stress which is often a major factor that hinders a woman from getting pregnant. Stress alters many functions in a person’s body and can cause both men and women to have fertility issues. Scientists have been able to prove that stress increases levels of stress hormones in the body such as cortisol. This may prevent the body’s main sex hormone from its normal function which can suppress sperm count, ovulation, and overall sexual activity. A perfect balance and harmony in reproductive hormones are vital to the reproductive system.
When Should I Have Acupuncture Treatments?
Acupuncture treatments for infertility are usually best when started approximately three months prior to an in vitro procedure. This gives Dr. Chen ample time to work on maximizing blood flow to the proper areas of the reproductive system. As the transfer date approaches, Dr. Chen recommends a procedure right before and the day after the fertilized embryo is transferred.
